Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Good Shepherd offers many opportunities to participate in our worship and service ministries.  The table below lists service areas, their purpose, time requirements, and the related responsibilities.  If you are interested in participating in these areas, please contact the committee leaders, the pastor, the church office, the Parish Life Associate or the Volunteer Coordinator.  We are grateful for the opportunity to use our time and talents in the service of our mission.

Worship Committee

Oversees all aspects of services

One meeting per month

Planning, scheduling, and implementing all worship services.

Acolyte

To assist Pastor during worship

One Sunday every six weeks or so

To light and put out candles, assist with offering, communion, and baptisms. Open to 5th-12th graders, training given.

Altar Guild

Care of altar appointments and vestments

Meetings once a month. Time required on some Saturdays and Sundays.

Caring for and changing paraments, communion linens, and candles, as well as placing flowers on altar and setup and take down for services.

Assisting Minister

To involve lay people in worship services

One service every 6 weeks

Assist pastor in worship. Open to anyone above confirmation age. Training given.

Children's Activity Leader

Supervise a special activity for pre-school children during the sermon at 8 & 11 a.m.

20 minutes a Sunday 3-4 times a year

Lead an activity for young children up to 2nd grade. Materials provided.

Children's Sermon

To present the Gospel to children in a 3-5 minute sermon

Preparation and time for sermon 5-6 times a year

Prepare and present children's sermons. Resources provided.

Choirs

To lead the congregation in liturgical singing and participate in community concerts

Rehearsal once a week and singing at one service on Sunday

Senior choir: Adults
Youth choir: 7-12th grades
Junior choir: K-6th grades

Handbell choir

To play at services and festivities during the year

Rehearsal once a week

Youth and adults.

Instrumentalists

To provide special music for worship services

Practice time and Sunday morning worship services

Anyone willing to volunteer their talent.

Lectors

To involve lay people in worship services

8-10 times a year

To read the appointed first and second lessons. Open to anyone above confirmation age.

Nursery Attendants

To provide child care for pre-schoolers during worship

4-5 Sundays a year

Supervise children in nursery during worship. Males and females. Confirmation age and above.

Ushers

Greet worshipers, distribute bulletins, seat late comers, assist with communion and offering, set tape recorder.

6-8 Sundays a year

Anyone confirmation age or older. Training given.

Wedding Coordinators

Help to coordinate weddings.

2-3 weddings a year

Training given.

Christian Ed Committee

Planning, scheduling and implementing congregation's educational program for all ages.

One meeting per month, help with 4-6 special events a year.

Oversee Sunday Church School, intergenerational events and all other educational events.

Confirmation Mentor

Serve as a Christian Role Model for one confirmand

About 8-10 hours a year

Do three hours of service with the student and attend some Confirmation meetings.

Confirmation Teacher

Teach Confirmation material to 7-8 graders

Two Sunday afternoons per month, 2 hour classes, Sept-May

Curriculum provided.

Cradle Roll Kids Care

To provide child care for 0-2 year olds during SCS.

One hour on Sunday every 4-6 weeks

Supervise care of pre-schoolers. Confirmation age or above.

Sunday Church School Administrator

To help oversee and administer the SCS program.

Sunday mornings throughout the school year

 

Sunday Church School Teachers
(children, youth, substitutes)

SCS is the primary method of fulfilling Christ's command: "Go and teach..." For ages 3 through adult.

Courses can be taught in teams throughout the school year and also in units (4-6 week units)

Curriculum provided. Includes stories, crafts, lesson plans. Supplies and training provided.

Adult SCS Teacher

6-week mini-courses in Bible, theology, church history, or contemporary issues.

1 hour on Sunday mornings for six weeks

Prepare and lead a six-week course for adults.

Librarian, Library Support

To maintain Church library.

Work in library as needed.

Catalog, repair, and process books.

Youth Ministry Committee

To provide a ministry for and by young people in grades 7-12.

Approximately 4-6 events per year, mainly on weekends.

Help plan, implement, and oversee youth events.

Evangelism Committee

To encourage active participation in the life of the church and its ministries.

One meeting per month and 1-2 visits or phone calls per month.

Plan, implement, and oversee a ministry to prospective and inactive members.

Greeter

To welcome members and visitors to our worship service.

15 minutes before service 1-2 times a year.

Arrive 15 minutes before service and greet worshipers as they arrive.

New Member Sponsor

To provide new members with a contact in the church and help them get oriented, if needed.

One Sunday morning and one or two follow up contacts in the following year.

Call incoming new member prior to joining church and attend new member's reception. Follow up to see how new members are doing.

Fellowship Committee

To provide opportunities for church family to gather for fellowship.

Small amount of baking periodically for coffee hours, dinners, and serving.

Coffee hours once a month, plus annual congregation luncheon, Maundy Thursday dinner, church picnic, and stewardship dinner.

Quilting

To make quilts for Lutheran World Relief

Two times a month.

Two mornings a month to help piece, sew, and hang the quilts.

Butterfly Group

To provide fellowship for widowed or single women.

Occasional outings.

Enjoying fellowship with one another.

Adult Fellowship

To provide a social time and Christian fellowship to all adults of Good Shepherd.

One meeting per year, time to plan two events.

Each member of task force will be asked to help plan and implement two events.

Lunch Bunch

To provide a time of Christian fellowship for those members aged 55+

One lunch per month.

 

Women of the ELCA
Mary Circle
Sarah Circle

To gather as a community of women to grow in faith, affirm their gifts, support one another in their callings, and engage in ministry and action.

Meeting once a month; craft night once a month to work on service projects.

Serve as hostess or present program or prepare devotions for a monthly meeting approximately once a year. Help work on various service projects throughout the year.

Finance Committee

To oversee the financial affairs of the congregation.

One meeting per month.

 

Health Ministry Committee

To empower its members to increasingly assume the responsibility for their own holistic health and to promote their well-being.

As needed.

Maintain Health Ministry bulletin board, write articles for The Voice, continue to monitor County Police Senior Roll Call Program, to act as an advisory board for the Parish Nurse, and work on planning programs within the congregation.

Teller

Count the money after Sunday services.

One hour after the last worship service every 4-6 weeks.

 

Financial Secretary

To do entries into computer/maintain financial programs.

Two hours per week.

 

Planning Committee

To develop and maintain a vision for the congregation.

4-8 meetings per year.

 

Property Committee

Plan for needs for building and grounds. Schedule work.

Meeting once a month.

Oversee care and maintenance of building and grounds.

Green Thumbs

Plant, tend to flower beds.

As needed, May-October.

Water during dry weather, weed and remove dead flowers.

Work details (building, grounds, Clean-Up Day)

Wash windows, repair items. Trim hedges, painting.

Usually Saturday morning, once a month.

Keep church maintained as needed.

Mutual Ministry Committee

Serve as a two-way street between the staff and the congregation.

Approximately 4 meetings per year, plus occasional subcommittee activities.

By listening, interpreting, advising, conferring, evaluating, and as necessary recommending Council action.

Stewardship Committee

To plan, direct, and control the year round stewardship activities at Good Shepherd and to conduct the annual Every Member Response campaign to obtain member support for the church of their time, talent, and treasure.

One meeting per month, plus special activities as required.

Attend committee meetings and contribute ideas, energy and time to planning, organizing, and directing the Stewardship Committee activities.

Archivist

To maintain records of the church's history.

As needed.

 

The Voice

To help prepare the monthly newsletter for mailing.

One morning per month.

Fold, staple, and prepare bulk mailing for the church's monthly newsletter.

Office help

To assist in the church office with telephone answering, typing, filing, UPS and postal mailings.

As needed.

 

Social Ministry Committee

Function as the congregation's representative in reaching out to those who are victims of poverty and injustice in the local area and throughout the world.

One meeting per month.

Committee tries to understand the needs and problems of our community and develop programs so our congregation can respond to those needs. Serve on LCS and Hilltop Boards.

Visitation

Provide a ministry to members who are ill or homebound.

As needed.

Make a visit to a person identified by the church office.

Shepherds

Provide a ministry to members who are ill or homebound.

One visit per month, five meetings per year.

Visit assigned friend once a month.

Prayer Chain

To provide a ministry of prayer.

As needed.

Volunteers for the Prayer Chain agree to receive a call for prayer, pass that call on to the next name on the list, and pray according to the request until further notice.

Transportation

Elderly non-drivers and residents of Luther Towers need transportation to medical appointments.
Voluntary Services Organization needs volunteers to pick up and deliver items for needy families.

As needed.

 

Prepare emergency meals

Helping congregational families in bereavement or need.

As needed.

 

Luther Towers

To provide a more comfortable and varied life for the resident of Luther Towers.

60 hours per year.

Work in the coffee shop, gift shop, and craft shop; organize and host parties, outings and other social activities; visit shutins and welcome new residents; organize fund-raising events.

Hilltop Neighborhood Center

To provide study assistance to pre-teen children.

6:30-8:00 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday evenings when school is in session.

Work with students in small groups, or on a one-on-one basis, providing homework assistance, sharing special interests and skills (e.g. handicrafts, computers).

Emmanuel Dining Room

To serve the hungry in Wilmington.

Four hours on the 10th of each month.

1. Bakers: provide five dozen cookies, delivered to the church by early morning on the 10th of the month.
2.
Servers: four people per month to prepare and serve a meal of lasagna, fruit, and desert.
3. Cooks: to prepare cooked chopped beef.
Assistance provided by EDR staff.

L.I.F.E.

To provide food for needy families.

One morning each month.
